|The Houston Luanda Sister City Association|
The Houston Luanda Sister City Association, HLSCA, is one of the most proactive Sister Cities organizations in Houston. Born out of the desire to bring together two transatlantic cities – Houston, from North America, and Luanda, from Southern Africa – HLSCA is truly synonymous to giving and reaching out to the needy. HLSCA is run by a group of volunteers elected by members of the respective communities they work and live.
Annual soccer tournaments, participating at World’s Fair Zones and community summits, and attending Mayor’s breakfast events and Port of Houston Authority receptions lead the Association’s list of activities. HLSCA also coordinates, arranges, and delivers medical supplies to hospitals and medical centers in Luanda. The post-conflict era has been challenging for Angola, and with these delivery initiatives, HLSCA hopes to assist the Angolan government – at local and central levels – in their effort to minimize the hardship the Angolan citizens have gone through. These activities have only been possible with the generosity and involvement of such private sector organizations as SonAir, Panalpina, UAL, CSA, Halliburton, Chevron, and ExxonMobil. Needless to say, the critical role of and commitment by both the Governor of Luanda province and the Mayor of Houston have been the lifeblood of the Association’s existence and have enabled it to carry out its planned activities.
As in the past, in 2007 the Consulate General of Angola will continue to help achieve the goals enshrined in the Association Bylaws. So this Website provides just one of many ideal forums for the Association to put out there whatever initiatives and programs it has in store. Through this Consulate General’s Website, the wider e-readership will also be able to send their views regarding the impact the Association’s activities have had on their communities, and perhaps suggest new ideas and the best ways to fulfill its mission.
